Interjet

Interjet a 100% Mexican company concerned with providing the best service, and be at the forefront of technology for the benefit of its customers and concerned about the environment, was the first Latin-American airline to make a flight with Biodiesel on April 2011 called ECOJET.

The bio jet fuel was produced from vegetable oil from Jatropha cultivated by Mexican producers in the State of Chiapas, Mexico. The production of this toxic fruit generates employment and environmental benefits, it is planted in poor soils that are not suitable for other crops, depleted forest areas are reforested and require temporary irrigation. Interjet encourages each of its passengers to donate 10 pesos per passenger per reservation so that Huella Azul, can invest the donations into innovative forestry practices in Mexico thus helping mitigate carbon emissions which are an inevitable aspect of our way of life and thus balance the impact on the environment. This partnership with Huella Azul directly supports rural communities thrive, apart from responsible forest management. FAQS 1. Why offset your flight with us? Each time you fly there is an impact on climate change because the fuel used by the aircraft results in the release of carbon dioxide into the upper atmosphere.  Interjet is offering its passengers the opportunity to offset the emissions related to flights taken with us. 2. What is climate change and why is it a problem? While patterns of the Earth's climate have always changed throughout our planet’s history, today the term "climate change" is generally used to refer to changes in climate patterns during the past 100 years that are thought to have been caused by human activities, such as burning fossil fuels when we fly in airplanes. These activities are increasing the levels of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide which retain the heat reflected from the planet’s surface which otherwise would be dissipated into space. In the past the amount of such gases in the atmosphere was an acceptable average amount which in contrast maintained average temperature across the planet to sustain life. The increase in these gases has increased the temperatures on Earth, causing changes to prevailing weather patterns (climate change). This is what is known as the "greenhouse effect." 3. What is aviation’s impact on global warming? Fuel used by aircraft engines results in carbon dioxide and other substances being released to the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide contributes directly to the greenhouse effect. 4. What is carbon offsetting? Carbon offsetting involves investing in projects that prevent or reduce emissions being released thus counterbalancing the emissions associated with your flight. 5. Will offsetting solve the issue of climate change? No, while offsetting does not reduce emissions directly, it allows projects to occur that either take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or avoid its release. Offsetting also helps raise awareness of climate change issues and the impact that our lifestyles have on the environment. 6. Is carbon offsetting compulsory on my flight? No – Interjet’s Carbon Offset Program is completely voluntary. It allows you to make personal choice to offset greenhouse gas emissions related to your travel with us. 7. How is the payment of $1 USD for emission abatement calculated? This is based on the purchase price of greenhouse gas abatement projects (dollars per ton), and taking into account the mean number of passengers that travel with Interjet annually, we come up with a friendly price for carbon abatement. 8. Can I contribute more than what is calculated through this program? No, currently you can only pay this amount through the carbon abatement program that Huella Azul, A.C. and Interjet are implementing. 9. Is my contribution tax deductible? Yes, your contribution is tax deductible. 10. Can I get a receipt for my contribution? Yes, once you finalize your transaction with Interjet send us all your information to recibos@huellazul.com 11. Where does my money go? Which projects? To projects managed by Huella Azul, who invests in projects 100% Mexican dedicated to the mitigation of climate change through reforestation and the promotion of sustainable rural development in Mexico. Payment for ecosystem services programs for carbon sequestration through reforestation and forest and jungle management providing social and environmental co-benefits.  12. How do you choose which projects to fund? Huella Azul is who develops and/or looks to invest in projects that are or can be certified by international organizations, which verify that projects capture the proposed number of emissions. 13. Are the projects independently verified? Yes, under the Plan Vivo program, standardized by the Plan Vivo Foundation, whom verifies that the carbon credits sold are neither more nor less of those that each project can produce and sell. 14. Can I choose which program my contribution goes to? Not at this time, however you can be sure that only certified projects by international organizations and projects developed in Mexico will be supported, in order to conserve the environment and help local communities in their development. 15. Does Interjet make any profit from this transaction? No. 100% of the money raised through our optional program for emission reduction is invested into projects managed by Huella Azul, A.C. The airline covers administration costs. 16. Why do different companies give different prices to offset emissions from the same flight? We understand that there are other methodologies for calculating emissions based on kilometers traveled during flight. You would need to ask the different companies about the details of how they calculate their emissions.
